| | Namal Perera, a senior journalist and Mahendra Ratnaweera, political officer of the British High Commission were attacked recently. This is not the first time that media personnel are attacked. It cannot be said it is the last too. Whoever has done this attack on Namal and Ratnaweera must be condemned. Such attacks on the media are unacceptable.

| | Sri Lanka has become a country, where violence is unleashed in the name of democracy. There has been designed violence unleashed on the fourth estate to silence the press. This time, a respected journalist Nimal Perera, who is considered as an impartial writer, has been targeted. Mahinda Ratna, an employee of the British High Commission who has been accompanying him, too, has been attacked. He is also respected as an independent journalist.

| | Media men serve the people keeping in mind the welfare of the people and the country. Unfortunately, they have to face many challenges in the discharge of their duties. International community has expressed concern over the threats faced by the journalists in Sri Lanka. It is a disgrace to the country.

In late 1980's President Premadasa had to host the SARCC conference in Sri Lanka, while the LTTE was fighting a war with the Indian troops - peacekeeping force - in the north-east. President Premadasa maintained that the SARCC conference could not be hosted in Sri Lanka, while there was a presence of foreign troops in the island.
